This ulunthu kanji is a healthy porridge made with black urad dal and rice as main ingredients. This is one of the kanji recipes I wanted to give a try since a long time. I got the recipe from a friend as its a staple in their house for lunch atleast once. Urad Dal is good source of protein in vegetarian diet.

Instructions to make Urad dal porridge ulunthan kanji:
  1. Dry roast 1 cup urad dal in a kadai till the dal gets heated.
  2. It should be cooked in a mashy consistency. Check after 7 whistles if not, cook for 2 more whistle.Now our dal is cooked well.
  3. We have to prepare palm jaggery syrup. To prepare that, heat a vessel add 1/4 cup of palm jaggery and 1 glass of water. Let it disslove in water. Filter it.
  4. Add palm jaggery syrup to cooked urad dal. Leave it to boil.
  5. Add a glass of milk and let it to boil. At last add a pinch of dry ginger powder and switch off the stove.
  6. Our simple and healthy ulunthankanji (urad dal porridge) is ready to taste.

I got the recipe from a friend as its a staple in their house for lunch atleast once. Urad Dal is good source of protein in vegetarian diet. This makes these beans an inexpensive, economical and tasty protein source. Urad dal has anti inflammatory properties. Usually a hot poultice of black gram is used in inflammation of joints and muscle pain.
